American Hip-hop song-smith August Alsina revealed in an interview with Jada Pinkett Smith on Tuesday that he’s battling an autoimmune disease that’s affecting his liver.
The 24-year-old “Been Around the World” singer opened up in an interview with Jada Pinkett-Smith.
“The reality is that I’m sick all the time,” he told the actress. “I don’t really like to talk about it because I’m not looking for anybody’s sympathy. Don’t treat me like I’m a f–king cancer patient, because I’m not.”
In 2014, Alsina, a New Orleans native, collapsed on stage in New York and spent three days in a coma.
A year later, he told fans that he was undergoing surgery to try to save his eyesight.
“Please excuse my defense mechanism in this clip. I’m sicker than ever & having a hard time accepting what I feel & what the Doctors are saying is most true,” Alsina, who won Best New Artist at the 2014 BET Awards, wrote on Instagram.
“After sitting down and talking with my father’s mother and sister.. They explained to me that sickness & illness runs in my family. My father & grandfather both died of severe illness. But they were FIGHTERS & that’s all that matters. Just ride with me is all I ask.”
Alsina, whose father and stepfather struggled with crack cocaine addictions, left New Orleans with his mother after Hurricane Katrina hit.
Five years later, his older brother was shot and killed, which served as Alsina’s inspiration for his 2016 mixtape “The Product.”
“Everything you hear on the mixtape is a true story. Basically, I let you into my life. For me, ‘struggle’ is inspiration,” he told Global Grind at the time.
“I dedicated that mixtape to my oldest brother that I lost last year. His birthday just passed on April 15 and I dropped that day in honor of him. That’s really the inspiration behind it. Just making him proud. I’m sure he’s proud about it.”
